The Touareg represents a new vehicle concept at the top end of the sport utility vehicle (SUV) scale. Unlike previous vehicles in this segment of the market, it combines the characteristics of a high-class off-road vehicle with the comfort and convenience of a luxury saloon car - and the dynamic attributes of a sports car. The Volkswagen Touareg is being launched with either a 162 kW (220 bhp) V6 spark-ignition engine or a V10 TDI diesel developing 230 kW (313 bhp). Later, a five-cylinder TDI and a V8 spark-ignition engine, both new designs, will be available. All Touaregs are equipped with 4XMOTION permanent four-wheel drive and a six-speed gearbox (automatic transmission with the V10 TDI engine). The Touareg V10 TDI also has air suspension with CDC (Continuous Damping Control), giving it a standard of ride comfort both on and off the road that a vehicle of this type has never possessed until now. Volkswagen is also showing its full current range of models at the Paris Show. The new Phaeton top-class luxury saloon car and the R32, the most powerful Golf ever made, are also celebrating their French-market premieres. The Phaeton is available with a 177 kW (241 bhp) V6 engine or a W12 unit that develops 309 kW (420 bhp). The Golf R32, which has four-wheel drive and a top speed of 247 km/h, has significant technical affinities with the Phaeton V6, since it is powered by the same high-torque 3.2-litre engine. Volkswagen's innovative technologies are not only concentrated on new, range-topping vehicles but also mean progress throughout the model programme. Examples of this are the economical but extremely dynamic FSI direct petrol-injection engines. Volkswagen is currently the only automobile manufacturer to offer these advanced engines in four of its model lines. The company first adopted this type of engine for its sporty Lupo FSI, with a power output of 77 kW (105 bhp). This was followed by the Golf FSI and Bora FSI, with an engine developing 81 kW (110 bhp) and, as the most recent model of this kind, the Polo FSI with a 63 kW (86 bhp) engine. Compared with similar sizes of engine equipped with conventional intake-pipe fuel injection, all three develop up to 15 percent more power and also use less fuel. (Sept. 19, 2002) [Homepage] [
